Friends...
after spending so many days at Batam with a whole bunch of friends, i believe that all our relations build up due to this trip. classmates become close friends, we bonded well even with the lecturers [Ms Lek, Ms Dawn, Danny]. A big Thank You to the 3 lecturers that guide us and take great care of us throughout the journey.
What I learn?
i learn alot of things from this trip, both in the view of optometry and also outside optometry.
i manage to have the opportunity of performing VA testing and Retinoscopy before i step into year-3 clinic and this i believe will give us an advantage over others. i learn how to have patience and not to give up even if you cant get the RX after a long time. practice makes perfect.
i also learnt to appreciate what we have and to know how fortunate we are to live in Singapore. on the other hand they make me realise that happiness is the most important thing in the world. they might not be rich or even fans in their classroom but they are happy with what they have. their laughter and smiles worth much more. their innocence...
they made me grow up.
Feelings...
as i compare all 3 schools, i feel that we bonded well with the first school. i miss the times we played with them on the other side of the window, all the funny stuff like Jian's magic. miss the kids there, the autograph signing, the view of them running behind our bus. i feel sad that day we left the first school. and with it is a bit of regret... i regret not buying some little stuff like chocolates or sweets from the school "canteen" to give them, a small token can make a difference.
not sure whats the feeling now. some kids have blur vision since young and their VA 0.7+, we can help some by giving them glasses but there are also a handful which we cant do much to help them. i feel so helpless especially when the girl Eva could only read 03 after correction, i couldnt do much more to help.
well, life have to go on...
i am looking forward, hoping there will be more overseas trips ahead in my career to help more kids.

Day1, 19 March
went school in morning to transport the equipments to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Zhen came to send us off so we took some photos at the terminal. reached Batam at around 1200 Batam time[BT]. the guide was already waiting for us at the terminal. we went to our resort to put our luggage then we went to the first school, Sekolah Dasar Negeri 003, to set up at around 1330BT. we took a group photo with the guides after we finish the setting up and left the place at 1500BT. cos we manage to finish early, we went to town! bought alot of junk food and some neccessity. then we slack at the resort awhile before having dinner at the resort lobby at 1930BT. we had a debrief that night and everyone is anxious about the next day...

Day2, 20 March
had our breakfast at lobby and left for the school at 0745. we prepared ourselves and the kids came roaming in at 0810. at around 0940 Ms Lek told us that we only did 50kids and so we have to speed up. had our lunch at 1200BT before continuing the screening process. at 1520 we completed our target for the day! [er...i forgotten whether we went town today, can anyone confirm?] after dinner we had debrief and the lecturers gave us suggestion on how to speed up the screening.

Day3, 21March
once again screening the whole morning till 1200BT when we have our lunch before continuing. at 1500 we completed the target! some of us went out to talk to the kids and took some photos with them. oh ya, we found a cute boy with bunny tooth!
Day4, 22 March
today is a short day, we finished our screening at 1100BT. we were asked to teach the teachers there how to use the self-test screening charts and teach them proper eye hygiene. after that is the start of Singapore Idol! the kids there crowd around us to get our signatures and phone numbers. we took lots of photos with the kids there and a group photo with the teachers there. when our bus left, we could see the kids running behind us. that was a touching scene... *sobz*
we went to the second school to set up at around 1300.

the next day is KW bday so we decided to give him a surprise that night and even all the lecturers participated in the plan. and of course you could see kw's shocking face!

Day5, 23 March
a new location and i started off with retinoscopy. time for me to practice my ret but i still took a long time to get the prescription. nothing much really happened at the second school except few cases of nystagmus and tropias. oh ya, the main thing that happened is the VA-Ret relation~! haha... and Casper is very pissed about it
Day6, 24 March
my turn for VA taking and it's also the last time i doing VA in this overseas trip. if i am not wrong, we went for volleyball match at Turi Beach Resort after the screening! Danny is also sporting enough to join us for the game.
Day7, 25 March
management day for me! finally my turn for management, which is equivalent to giving free stickers and sweets to those that finish the screening. but it's hard in a way cos the kids outside the windows are so noisy and i have to ignore them. haha... we packed up after we completed the screening at this school. while i was packing, Chepy asked me go outside where there are few secondary girls wanted to communicate using English [er...]. just shook hands and intro abit la, realised that they actually learn some basic english. before we left, the kids there shook our hands and also went after our bus. after the packing up we went set up at the final school, Sekolah Dasar Negeri 005 before going back to resort. we put our stuff and go to town~! it's a mistake not to spend the rest of Rupiahs lor...
Day8, 26 March
Casper, Boon, Mae and I took cab to megamall to spend the rest of our money. and guess what, the cab blew one tyre. all of us went down and did what we know to help the driver in the tyre changing. shop for a long time before leaving the place at 1700BT. Casper spent the most money cos he bought 2 Levis Jeans! after dinner we went over to the other resort to play Taboo, a verbal game. we will be leaving the next day so everyone packed up their stuff that night.
Day9, 27 March
Last day for all of us...woke up early morning to set up at the school and by the time we reached there are already lots of kids queuing outside. initially the VA station is so busy but after that the ret station got worst. i did ret for a boy and was so glad to get a pair of glasses for him. i also did on a girl[Eva] and her myopia is about -5D. i think she suffered most under my hands cos i could see that the trial frames are heavy that she have to support it with her hand. and the worst part is that i wanted to give her a minute break but dunno how to communicate. i did my best to get her VA from 0.7 to 0.3, Danny decide to get custom lenses for her.

BACK FROM BATAM...
well, finally back after so many days overseas at Batam for attachment. so many things on my mind to blog but i wont be doing the story telling now cos abit tired. i just finished the unpacking and sorting of gifts. i bought 2 shirts for myself, a pair of earring for my mum and sis each, beer for my dad and a buddha sculpture for my grandma. i think i spent alot on food too... i spent approximately 400k total.
well, tmr we no need go school so i will spend the day blogging with regard to the trip. hopefully my net is steady enough for me to upload photos onto my blog.

Thursday, March 16
today is a busy day... morning was quite slack cos nothing much of packing left to do. after lunch i went with KiatWee and Sylvia to collect the tickets. KiatWee borrowed the car from his dad so we have a transportation to Tanan Merah. wa, the ride there was so long sia...! haha... and the piggy Sylvia was sleeping till so shiok sia. haa... when we got there i went with KiatWee to collect the tickets cos Sylvia still wanna slp
after collecting the tickets we went Geylang with the intention of collecting the plaque also. once again me n KiatWee walked quite a distance to the shop, leaving that [oink oink] in the car. haha... but when we got there the person said that they made a mistake and can only collect it tmr! sian diao... no choice lor.
then we went to the Ubi area to get the bubble wrap. this time, finally, Sylvia went with me to get the wrap. wa, her friend's dad really generous to give us the wrap for free! KiatWee also came up after awhile...
so in total KiatWee drove for about 60km and for 3hours!

15March, Wednesday
today we have early lunch at 12noon! we went Clementi for lunch and to look at some stuff. tried a sport shoe and Casper told us to buy from him cos got discount... haha, got a sports shoe for 9bucks to bring to batam.
12 March, Sunday
went Jurong Sports Hall early morning for the Funival. i was in charge of the AutoRefractor and it was quite hard initially since i am not quite used to the machine, but after awhile with the help of SokHong/Tacy/HweeTeng it was quite ok la... realised that working with kids is hard cos difficult to control where they look and they have really short attention span. haha...
went Boon's house after that to play com, then went out for dinner.
11 March, Saturday
went back school with the guys to transport the stuff needed for our Funival on Sunday. then we took a Maxicab to Jurong Sports Hall to set up our booth. we manage to set up quite quickly so we went Jurong Point for dinner... walked around then we went off at about 8+.
10 March, Friday
today only half day for us so aft lunch we went play badminton at sports hall... wa, so long no play liao le wor.haha... my skills quite lousy la. after playing awhile some of us went the gym for workout... went home at around 5+

Thursday, March 9
yesterday is the 3rd day of our ITP and it can be considered our busiest day... we photocopied all the flyers and believe or not, e folded about 800 pieces of paper! haha... ah wee borrowed the video camera from the school we took some videos too la. here are some of the photos we took:
after the itp yesterday we went Suntec for dinner at Marche and we went for movie... we watched the Big Mama show, not sure how to spell it la. hahaz...

Tuesday, March 7
2nd day of ITP liaoz...according to the plan, we will be spending 10days(19-28) at Batam doing screening test. for now we are supposed to prepare for the Funival this sunday at Jurong East Sports Hall, at the Funival we are supposed to play witht he kids n take their VA. hmms, seems like we will need to handle lots of kids! hahaz...wonder what will the accommodation be like in Batam...? so far the teacher only tell us that we will be in chalet and we will be "living under one roof", hmmms... what does that actually mean?? er...anyone tried interpreting this line? i dont have a good feeling about this, i would prefer "find a room mate"...

Finally home at 9:00pm...morning meet Yihong at Ginza play LAN, although only 2 of us we played till v shiok sia. lol... chiong CS and Battlefield 1945(eh, i still dunno how to fly that plane!). hahaz... then went Longqiang house for mahjong. they recommend me a game call SilkRoad, a online free game. hmmm... the graphics seems good(3D) and surely it's high quality for a free online RPG game.
aft that we ask Kenny join us too and we went play K-Pool, wa long time no play liao so took quite some time to finish the game. haiz, my aiming is so lousy! hahaz... had dinner, "shop" Popular bookstore then went home. haa...

last paper fianlly over and it marks the end of our year-two life...? well that will hafta wait till the results to be out then i can comment on that. i have no confidence in my pathology2 and i have a feeling that this module can cause me to repeat the year...sian-ness. end up home after the last paper...
